HIV Prevention

HIV prevention is everyone’s responsibility. KC CARE’s dedicated Prevention Specialists are here to empower people with and without HIV to take control of their sexual health to end the HIV epidemic.

PrEP vs PEP

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a long-term antiretroviral medication that can prevent HIV infection. When taken daily, PrEP is 99% effective at preventing HIV infection through sex and 74% effective at preventing HIV infection through needle use.

PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a short-term course of HIV medication that should be taken as soon as possible after potential HIV exposure to reduce the risk of infection. PEP is 80% effective when taken within 24 hours of HIV exposure. PEP is not a substitute for the regular use of HIV prevention, such as condoms and PrEP.

DoxyPEP (Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) is a short-term course antibiotic medication that should be taken as soon as possible after potential STI (chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis) exposure to reduce the risk of infection. DoxyPEP is up to 66% effective when taken within 72 hours of STI exposure. DoxyPEP is not a substitute for the regular use of STI prevention, such as condoms and dental dams.
