Emergency HIV Medication

PEP reduces your risk of HIV infection within 72 hours of possible exposure.

  • PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a course of HIV medication taken as soon as possible after potential HIV exposure to reduce the risk of HIV infection.

  • After being exposed to HIV, PEP must be taken within 72 hours of possible exposure. The full course (28 days) must be completed to be effective.

PEP might be right for you if:

    • A condom broke during sex

    • You shared injection supplies with someone else

    • You experienced a needle stick

    • You experienced an unwanted sexual encounter

  • Yes. Mild side effects have been reported, but none that are serious. PEP is 80% effective when taken within 24 hours of HIV exposure. PEP is not a substitute for the regular use of HIV prevention, such as condoms and PrEP.
